Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) in Atlanta, GA
Sagging skin and fatty bulges detract from the natural contours of your upper arms. If weight loss and aging have left you with excess skin and fat on your arms, we invite you to learn more about brachioplasty by double board certified plastic surgeon, Marisa Lawrence, M.D. At her boutique practice, Dr. Lawrence serves men and women in Alpharetta, Atlanta and surrounding areas in Georgia.
What is Brachioplasty (Arm Lift)?
An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is performed to contour the excess skin and fat deposits of the upper arm. These problems may be due to weight loss, aging or pregnancy. An arm lift is performed on the section between the elbow and armpit, as the lower arm area does not tend to have excess skin and fat.
What Are the Benefits of an Arm Lift?
Your brachioplasty removes skin and fat to produce a more natural, contoured appearance. Some patients experience chafing when the upper arm has loose hanging skin, and the procedure may help with the issue.
Am I a Candidate for Brachioplasty?
Arm lift surgery can be performed on a large variety of patients, including normal weight patients with fatty deposits and older patients who simply need skin tightening. However, the majority of patients undergoing brachioplasty are weight loss patients who have excess skin and fat in their upper arms.
What Should I Expect from an Arm Lift?
For patients who have upper arm fullness with no skin excess, liposuction alone can be effective in improving upper arm appearance. Laser-assisted liposuction both removes fat and tightens skin with minimal scarring. For patients with a small amount of extra skin in the upper arm, improvement can be attained with a minimal incision brachioplasty, where skin is removed through a small scar in the armpit. When a lot of excess skin tissue is removed, it leaves a scar from the elbow to the arm pit, sometimes extending onto the side of the chest wall. Although the scars are initially conspicuous, careful attention to scar management with silicone cream and laser treatments can make them less visible. These procedures are performed in outpatient surgery centers under general anesthesia and take about two hours. Compression sleeves are worn for one to two weeks and patients can resume normal activities in seven to ten days.
About Minimal Incision Brachioplasty
Minimal incision brachioplasty is a less aggressive option of arm lift surgery. The procedure requires a less visible incision in the armpit where we tighten a small amount of skin via liposuction. Minimal incision brachioplasty also requires use of a compression sleeve but the recovery time is slightly faster. Often the most important factor to consider when deciding between a brachioplasty and a minimal incision brachioplasty is skin laxity. If there is minimal extra skin liposuction may be the ideal option. For patients with excess skin in the arms a full brachioplasty may be recommended.
