Liposuction in Atlanta, GA
The best intentions and the healthiest diet and exercise routines cannot always reduce areas of fat around the body. Some love handles, muffin tops and bat wings are completely resistant to diet and exercise. Dr. Marisa Lawrence, an esteemed cosmetic surgeon, recommends liposuction to many individuals whose diet and exercise routines are ineffective. Liposuction, or suction-assisted lipectomy, is a safe and effective way to surgically remove fat. Our office primarily treats patients in Atlanta, Alpharetta and surrounding areas.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction treats stubborn areas of fat that are impossible to spot-tone. Liposuction is most commonly performed on the abdomen, back and buttocks, but can also treat the thighs, knees, calves, upper arms, face and even the neck. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, and the best candidates are not far from their ideal weight.
What Happens During Liposuction?
Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that takes several hours. Dr. Lawrence makes several small incisions in the treatment area, and inserts a thin, hollow tube called a cannula. She moves the cannula back and forth to break up the layers of fat, which are then suctioned from your body through a vacuum device that is connected to the cannula.
Dr. Lawrence may use a tumescent liposuction technique, in which fat cells are infused with a saline solution containing local anesthetic and epinephrine. This liquid firms the fat so it is easier to remove, and it also helps to reduce bruising and swelling after the procedure.
One of the latest liposuction trends involves using a laser to dissolve selected fat and tighten the skin. Dr. Lawrence offers SmartLipo Triplex, in which a laser is directed at the treatment area, melting the fat cells into liquid (so fat is easier to remove from your body) and simultaneously treating loose, saggy skin. The heat from the laser is believed to stimulate your body’s production of collagen, which is great for your overall appearance.
Dr. Lawrence will review your liposuction options during your personal consultation, and help you determine which method is best for your desired outcome.
What is the Recovery Period After Liposuction?
The length of your liposuction recovery will depend partially on the size of the treatment area, the method used and whether your liposuction was combined with any other surgical procedures (e.g., tummy tuck, breast augmentation). You will likely feel swollen and bruised after surgery. You will need to wear a compression garment over the treated area to minimize swelling and help your body adjust to its new shape. Prior to your surgery, Dr. Lawrence will provide more detailed instructions. These should be followed to the letter in order to prevent any post-operative complications.
What are the Risks of Liposuction?
Liposuction risks include infection, bleeding and reactions to the anesthesia. Your risk is increased if you are in poor health, smoke or take aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medications. Liposuction complications are rare in healthy patients who follow pre- and post-operative instructions. Please talk to Dr. Lawrence if you are worried about the risks of liposuction.
