Mommy Makeover in Atlanta, GA
As a mother of three, Dr. Lawrence knows personally how pregnancy, childbearing and breastfeeding can change your figure. As a recipient of a “Mommy Makeover” herself, she can describe first-hand how a combination of plastic surgery procedures can restore your figure to your pre-pregnancy shape and give your spirits a well-deserved lift as well. Dr. Lawrence offers Mommy Makeovers to women residing in Atlanta, Alpharetta and nearby areas.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover is tailored to the unique needs of each patient and may include:
- Breast lift, or mastopexy, to lift and reshape sagging breasts.
- Breast augmentation with implants to replace lost volume after breastfeeding.
- Tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, to remove excess skin from the lower abdomen and tighten overstretched abdominal muscles, restoring your flat pre-pregnancy tummy.
- Liposuction to remove excess fat deposits from “saddlebag” hips and slim your thighs.
- Body lift to tighten abdomen, hips and buttocks, and improve thigh contour.
Studies have shown that having more than one plastic surgery procedure at a time is no more dangerous than undergoing a single procedure, as long as the surgery does not take more than 4 to 5 hours. Women who choose to have breast augmentation and a tummy tuck as part of their mommy makeover may elect to have both procedures done at the same time. A typical breast augmentation procedure takes 1.5 hours, and a tummy tuck takes 1.2–2 to 3 hours, so they can safely be done in combination.
It’s advisable to wait until you’re finished having children before having a mommy makeover, as any future pregnancies may undo the improvements from the surgery. To make sure you’re fully recovered from childbirth, you should wait six months after your last pregnancy, or six months after weaning your youngest child to undergo surgery.
Will Breast Implants Be Necessary?
Breast implants are used to increase the volume and improve the shape of the breasts. Some women enjoy having fuller breasts during pregnancy and breast-feeding and are disappointed when their breasts get smaller afterwards. Implant placement can restore the lost volume and provide a fuller, rounder shape to the breasts. Anatomically shaped implants like Natrelle’s Style 410 can improve the upper breast shape with a very natural appearance. However, in women with ample breast volume there are other techniques of breast rejuvenation.
What Will a Mastopexy or Breast Lift Do?
A mastopexy, or breast lift, is a surgical procedure that lifts the breasts, tightens the skin, and elevates the position of the nipple and areola complex on the breast mound. The goal is to attain a youthful and natural-shaped breast. To accomplish this, there are some scars that will result. Nipple repositioning involves scarring around the areola. Tightening the lower breast requires a vertical scar from the areola to the breast fold. And skin removal requires scarring along the fold under the breast. The extent and location of the scars depends on the amount of skin relative to breast tissue and the skin quality of the patient. Patients who elect to have a mastopexy, or breast lift, generally agree the improvement in the shape of their breasts greatly outweighs the scarring that results. The scarring can be treated with our 1540 nm laser so it is barely visible!
Can I Tighten My Abdominal Wall Skin Without an Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck?
Pregnancy stretches out both the abdominal wall skin and abdominal wall muscles. After the first pregnancy the tissues can recoil to almost their pre-pregnancy tone. With repeated pregnancies and stretching, the recoil becomes less and less. A small amount of extra skin without lax abdominal muscle tone may tighten with radiofrequency treatments. These treatments allow skin tightening by gently warming the skin and creating new collagen growth over time. Typically a series of 6 treatments are administered, spaced about 4 weeks apart. Results are seen gradually over weeks to months. Maintenance treatments are typically recommended every 6-12 months to preserve the degree of skin tightening.
Will Sit-ups Improve My Abdomen After Pregnancy?
The toning of the abdominal wall muscles is definitely recommended after pregnancy. Toning and tightening the muscles will contribute to flattening of the abdominal wall unless the muscles of the abdomen, the rectus abdominis muscles, have been separated during the pregnancy. In this situation, a diastasis rectus occurs and there will be “pooching” of the abdomen no matter how much weight you lose or how many sit-ups you do. To correct this, an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is required.
When Is the Best Time to Have an Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck After Childbirth?
Dr. Lawrence recommends patients wait at least 6 months and preferably a year after the birth of their last child before having an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck. It is best to have lost any extra baby weight and be a healthy size before undergoing this procedure. It is not a weight loss method, but instead a way to contour your body, remove excess skin and tighten areas that need it. She also recommends the patient is certain they do not want to have more children before undergoing this procedure.
Can Liposuction Be Combined With the Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck?
Liposuction can safely be performed at the time of the abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck. Common areas for liposuction include the hips, waist, back, thighs, knees, arms, and chin. The use of the SmartLipo® Triplex Laser is used to tighten skin while reducing fat.
